Hello Chlotrudis Members!
For this week, Gil is recommending WINNEBAGO MAN. Amanda and Gil attended the IFFB-sponsored screening last week and really liked it. For those not familiar with the premise of the documentary, the filmmaker searches for Jack Rebney, the commercial spokesman for a series of Winnebago commercials in Iowa in the 1980's. During the commercial productions, Rebney would become frustrated and angrily curse at his crew in a very entertaining manner. With the birth of YouTube, these outtakes became extremely popular and the "Winnebago Man" became one of the most popular clips on the Internet. In the documentary, director Ben Steinbauer explores the new world of viral videos and the people who have unwillingly become infamous from this new form of media. The documentary is certainly entertaining but it is also interesting in how it explores the life of one individual and how that life can be changed from exposing a small segment of that life (from the 1980s no less) to millions of people over the web. The film did really well on the festival circuit, including the IFFB in 2009, and just opened at Kendall Square. Check out the four-star review from this week's Boston Phoenix. And check out the trailer below.
Some other films of interest out there include a pair of mjuch-beloved documentaries playing at the Brattle Theatre as part of the (Some of the) Best of the Oughts series. On Wednesday night you can catch a Chlotrudis winner, THE GLEANERS & I, and a Chlotrudis nominee, GRIZZLY MAN as a double feature! You won't want to miss that. Over at the Coolidge Corner Theatre Screening Room, the Coolidge Selects presents PHYLIIS AND HAROLD, an astoundingly frank journey through a disastrous 59-year marriage. If you're free on Sunday afternoon at 3pm, director Cindy Kleine and producer André Gregor (MY DINNER WITH ANDRE) will be in attendance for a Q&A. This one packed the house at the 2008 Boston Jewish Film Festival. Over at the MFA the Boston French Film Festival is wrapping up. Among the excellent films playing this weekend is HIDEAWAY directed by François Ozon who brought us the likes of THE SWIMMING POOL and 8 WOMEN.
Kicking off at the end of the week at the Museum of Fine Arts is the Roxbury International Film Festival. For years, filmmakers, distributors and film enthusiasts wondered why Boston, one of the largest metropolitan areas on the east coast, lacked a vehicle for supporting independent films by filmmakers of color or that showcased their experiences. This was the primary motivation behind the creation of the Roxbury International Film Festival (then, the Dudley Film Festival) in 1999. Now in its twelfth year, the Roxbury International Film Festival continues to showcase and honor the work of emerging and established filmmakers of color and has become the largest festival in New England dedicated to this genre. Their opening night film is SPEED-DATING (pictured right), a high—energy romantic comedy that follows three bachelors, speeding through life and scheming on women. Films will screen at the Museum of Fine Arts, the Massachusetts College of Art, Northeastern University, the Coolidge Corner Theatre, the Roxbury Center for the Arts at Hibernian Hall, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Haley House Bakery Cafe. Festival passes and tickets are now on sale at their website.
See you at the Movies!
Michael
